I recently went to see Pixels, and I thought it was rather good. Even though it had an absurd premise. There is a possibility of spoilers below, so read on with caution if you care about that.
Pixels was about aliens receiving a tape about old video games, and thinking that we challenged them in war. So they appear as video game characters to challenge us for the survival of our planet. It was basically a movie where the gamers become the heroes, and get the girl. However, it was full of absurdity, and that is kind of required for this kind of movie. Other problems include a lack of moral fiber on the part of the hero, and other minor inaccuracies related the games history and space travel.
- Aliens interpreting a bunch of cultural information as a declaration of war.
- A probe triggering an alien invasion in 30 years from when it was sent is completely absurd, because of the vast distances involved. Even [Voyanger 1][3] has not reached interstellar space yet and that was launched 40 years ago, so a message sent 30 years ago by probe would not reach another civilization that soon is bull.
- There were no cheat codes at this time in video game history, especially not in the arcade games they were playing. Because the first cheat code that depended on the controls used was the Konami Code, and that was not invented until 1986, 4 years after the competition in which cheating was involved, which was in 1982.
Overall, I thought it was a good movie, but had no lasting value. It was funny, and kind of fascinating. However, it felt like it should have been a shorter movie, because around the Gala at the White House, it just kind of felt like it was dragging on. So I would give this movie about 3.7 out of 5 stars.
