I just saw “Batman Ninja”, and it is the most over the top action movie ever. Although it lacks a plot, this movie has some of the best art ever and the action is completely over the top. I feel the action more than makes up for the lack of plot.
The general idea of the movie can be summed up in Batman’s entire rogues gallery is transported to feudal Japan, and Batman needs to defeat them to return to his time. Through out the movie new allies are met, and characters betray one another. The movie then climaxes in a classic mecha fight using the rogues castles at the end. I absolutely love the moving steam punk castle aesthetic, and their usage in this movie.
I love every action scene in this movie. The fight chorography is best in class. The action goes completely over the top, and looks better than most other action movies like the Fast and the Furious. Although Batman does seem weak towards the beginning of the movie, with his easy defeat at the hands of the Joker and the loss of the bat mobile. Although I kind of get it with modern technology going up against medieval technology at best. Batman should have shown more prudence in using his limited resources.
The art is also amazing. Although it kind of looks like a video game on the Playstation 3, it blends traditional drawn animation with CGI really well. It ends up feeling like anime. The steampunk aesthetic also brings a lot, and it gives me something I’ve always wanted to see, and something that I don’t think will be replicated. It’s just a Batman like this is above and beyond anything I could ask for.
All in all, if you’re looking for something that is more than beautiful mindless violence, this is not the movie for you. Otherwise I enjoyed, and it’s a decent movie, but I don’t think this movie has any value in watching again. Overall I give this movie a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
